Direct from Sao Paulo, Tulipa is Brazil’s latest gift to music - a talented young singer-songwriter whose playful tropicália pop draws on 1970s roots, combining rich vocals and catchy melodies - all underpinned by a tight-knit band driving out rock, pop and electronic grooves.
In a rare London appearance at Cargo on 19 December, Tulipa (her name means Tulip) and band perform tracks from her debut album 'Efêmera' (Totolo / Harmonia Mundi). The critically acclaimed release (which topped Rolling Stone Brasil’s list of the Best Album of 2010) featured a stellar cast of top young Brazilian artists including Ceu, Mariana Aydar, Thalma de Freitas (Orquestra Imperial) on backing vocals and Kassin on bass, along with her father Luis Chagas (from Itamar Assumpo’s band Isca de Polícia) and brother Gustavo Ruiz on guitars.
Hailed by critics around the world for her unforgettable live show and powerful stage presence, this is a real treat and for lovers of Brazilian music.
