Peter John Doyle was born on 28 July 1949; professionally an Australian pop singer who tasted success with a number of Top 40 hits in Australia in the era of 1960s, then he tasted success internationally as a member of the New Seekers in the early 1970s, before initiating his solo career in 1973. He started his career at the age of 9 as he appeared on a television talent show that featured children and was popularly known as Swallow’s juniors.
He then appeared on the show for the next five years. A year later, he progressed by his first recording “lucky devil”/ If Irish eyes were shining” on a 78 acetate. At the age of 14, he performed at Sunday afternoon pop shows in Melbourne’s festival hall and two years later he signed a contract to record with Ivan dayman’s Sunshine label. Being into a successful label where top singers such as Normie Rowe and Rony worsley resided, gave Pete a kick-start career success and also lead to regular appearances on Melbourne’s teen TV show, the Go Show.
He released about 45 records between 1965 and 1967 out of which about seven of them made to the top 40 list. Some of the successful ones were speechless by Conway Twitty’s and rousing version of Solomon burke’s stupidity. Pete was backed by Melbourne band known as the phantoms on the above mentioned recordings, inclusive of the two singles with the Grandmas band.
Later in may 1968, he joined the trio “The Virgil Brothers’, which was regarded as an Australia’s answer to the Walker Brothers. The Virgil Brothers released two singles in Australia in 1968, “The Temptations ‘Bout to Get Me” (a Top 5 hit) and “Here I Am”. They then relocated to United Kingdom where they recorded their third single, When You Walk Away with producer David McKay. Pete then left the trio which broke up soon after. He died in Castlemaine, Victoria, of throat cancer, on 13 October 2001.
