I can imagine that there was a ton of temptation for Ezra James to have made a really simple R&B track with “All About You”. All of the elements are there, the canned beats, the clean guitar tone, the smooth vocal line. But despite having all of the genre conventions, Ezra refuses to confine himself to the typical. The beat is probably the most astounding aspect of this track. There’s a wonderful desire here to go against the grain with a stuttering beat rather than the kind of continuous instrumental line that’s more typical of R&B tracks. And really that’s all it takes to make this track stand out from its competitors. There is a huge and complex understanding of rhythm here, the kind of understanding that allows musicians to redefine their specialties. That makes this a track worth listening to.
