Blake Shelton and Shakira turned around during the first run-through of the chorus; Usher later joined them. Shakira called her “angelic.”
Her background: She grew up in a military family, which meant moving a lot. “I’d have to make friends, and I’d have to leave friends,” she says. “The only thing really consistent in my life was music.” Her father describes her as “very determined.” When she was born, one of her kidneys had to be removed and she was told not to get involved in contact sports. Yet she competes in track and basketball. “People underestimate me,” Deja says, “and I like to prove them wrong.”
