A graduate trained in composition, a music teacher by trade and an artist by inclination, Marcus toured us around his patch of the Industrial Precinct on Cockatoo Island. He talked us through the sideways logic that has led to a Justin Bieber-inspired, time-based artwork occupying what was once a prison, a reformatory, a dockyard and a ship-building centre. The hyper-coloured chlorinated pool from Bieber’s Beauty and the Beat is looped and projected onto massive plastic sheets amidst the concrete and timber beams, the track is manipulated, and then Marcus sings. It’s in this space – between performance art, fetishised pop adoration and ephemeral installation – that Marcus’ work comes to life.
