In one day he might play saxophone for a country artist, flute or penny whistle for a gospel artist and clarinet in a traditional jazz band. His playing has given color and expression to a wide variety of artists' tracks, including Amy Grant, the Neville Brothers, Vince Gill and Michael McDonald. He is known for his reliable ensemble skills and his melodic, expressive solos.A son of a university professor, Sam attended Harvard and the University of Alaska in a effort to find his way through the turbulent late 60's and early 70's, finishing his formal education in music at Indiana University. He has said that the biggest part of his training, however, was in the studios and clubs of Nashville, where he has made a solid career out of being a "back-up" musician.Sam has more than 10 artist CD's in the smooth jazz and contemporary Christian genres. He has been nominated three times for a Dove Award and played on at least twoGrammy Award winning recordings. He is currently an artist with Village Square Music which is scheduled to release a smooth jazz Christmas project entitled, "Christmas By the Fire" on September 1st of this year. It features a blend of acoustic and contemporary sounds in fresh and relaxing renditions of the most famous Christmas songs. Sam plays alto and soprano sax on the CD which uses a wonderfully talented rhythm section based in Nashville. It is not, however, the classic Nashville sound, but a more West Coast jazz approach to the classics: melodic, fresh and comfortable.Sam continues to be an active studio musician, but he also leads a band called "City Lights" that is popular for wedding receptions and business conventions. They are often asked to do receptions for people in the music industry who want a dance band that has style and creativity. The same band uses the name "Phatjaz" when they appear in local clubs playing their comfortable mix of mainstreamand contemporary jazz.While music and the music business dominate Sam's schedule, his family remains the foundation of his life. He is married to Lee, Principal Clarinet of the Nashville Symphony, and they have two teenage children. They are members of Westminster Presbyterian in Nashville, a relationship that Sam says is a result of his life-long spiritual development that began with his parents unique blend of Jewish and Christian traditions.His favorite hobbies include water skiing, working out and downhill skiing.
