Well,certainlynotinthiscase:Listeningto“PascalPinon,”theband’seponymousdebutalbum,thefactthatyou’redealingwithabunchof16-year-oldteenagegirlsiswaytooevidentandin-your-facetomerelydismissitassomekindof“additionalcuteness”.Yet,thesongspresentedbyIcelandictwinsistersJófrídurandÁsthildurandtheirbandmatesHallaandKristínarecertainlythat:they’recute.Verymuchso.Cuteandsweetandsteaming-hotlikethosemuffinstheyservedattheirfirst-everliveperformance,aptlytitled“TheFriendlyGig”.Somewhatstrangethoughthatsomepeoplehavealreadycomplainedaboutthefoursomenotsmilingenoughonstage.Couldthatmeanit’snotallabout“cuteness”forthem?SincethenamePascalPinonreferstoatwo-headedfreakshow“celebrity”whodiedin1929(andwhosesecondheadwasreallyjustatumormodeledtolooklikeacraniumbymeansofawaxenhancement),onemightexpectsomeratherdisturbedDIYcompositions–especiallygiventhatthisbandistwo-headedaswell(thetwinthing).Yet,theseyoungladiesinsteadfocusonaltogetherdifferentfacetsoflife:Likealatter-dayThoreau(in“Walden”),Jófrídurpraisesthebeautyofnatureintheopeningtrack,whichtranslatesto“UnderClearSky”,comprisedofthreebeautifulchordsandsomepoeticlinesshecomposedwhenshewas13.Elsewhere,thefourgirlspayhomagetoIcelandicpoetDavídStefánsson(1895-1964),orsetratherexpected(HarryPotter)andunexpected(“thinwalls”,“shyness”)influencestomusic,singinginEnglishaswellasIcelandic,whiledeliberatelyignoringthelatesttechnicaladvancements:abedroom,abunchofguitars,flutes,andaglockenspielwilldojustfine,justlikethatonemicrophonetheyplacedinthemiddleofthehousetheyrentedtorecordtheirfragileDIYgems.It’sliketheydon’treallycareaslongasthere’senoughroom(seethetrack“Moi”)forsinginginunison.Accordingly,PascalPinonmanagetoturnthenaturallimitationsofadolescence(notenoughmoneyforbettermics;alackinexperience)intotheirveryadvantage,keepingtheirtracksshortandcrisp,andavoidingboththecheapslicknessofcampfire(orgeyser)romanticismandthesupposedlyfreshedgeofthenextteenagehypethat’safterTwitterbattleswithJustinBieberorthemost“Likes”onFacebook.Instead,PascalPinonareallaboutcreatingaconnection,thesmallestpossibledistancebetweentheirownfeelings(they’reteenagersafterall)andthelisteners.OntheirMySpace,itsays“Soundslike:awhisperinyourear”forareason.CallitNudeFolk,NewRomanticismorTheNewShy–whatmattersisthatPascalPinon,thoughnolongerthe“gangof14-year-olds”theywerewhentheyrecordedthisalbum,arejustgettingstarted:Whiletheirs/tdebut,whichtheyindependentlyreleasedinIceland,earningthemanominationfor“NewcomeroftheYear”atlastyear’sIcelandicMusicAwards,hasbeenpickedupbyMorrMusicforaninternationalrelease(naturallyitwastheirparentswhosignedthecontract),they’realreadybusylearningnewinstrumentsandworkingontheirsophomoreLP.Consideringthat,thewholeclaimabouttheirsongsbeing“allterribleshit”isnotevenanunderstatement.It’sanoutrightlie.
