Creating a track to play out at a friend’s house party, Sam had no idea that his re-edit of Alexander O’Neal’s “Criticize” would go on to be a dancefloor weapon in heavy-hitters sets, nor did he have any idea that it would be heard all throughout the U.K. on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 Show. In a short matter of time, Maxxi Soundsystem was playing gigs all around the world. It’s been two years since “Criticize” became an overnight sensation and Maxxi shows no signs of slowing down. We caught up with the U.K. native after his set in Metro Detroit’s Grasshopper Underground to talk about his transitional year, the best dance scenes, his Detroit experience, a full-length album and what’s next for the deep house luminary.
