This creative streak led to a place at Blackpool Art College where she worked at various arts and crafts and started to turn the pockets of notes and melodies in her head into something more concrete with the help of Parlophone's Jamie Nelson. In 2002, she signed a five album deal with Hut Records on the strength of her a cappella demos, but just six months after the release of her debut, That Girl, in 2003, the label was closed by EMI and she was dropped. Kirkham then teamed up with fellow musician Johnny Dunne to record the follow-up on her own label, SLK Music.Sunlight on My Soul, an enchanting mixture of Tudor madrigals, Celtic folk, and jazz was released in 2006 to critical acclaim.
