It's hard to believe that someone may be able to achieve -in just one year- a Beatport #1 that became the 2nd best selling track of the year, raze half the planet with a hit like " Oye Mira ", two major electronic music awards as Best Breakthrough Producer of the Year, the only Spanish artist nominated on Beatport Music Awards surrounded by names like Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner or Avicii; remixing some of the best Dance artists, publishing under major labels like Toolroom, Fresco, Nervous or Starlight, visiting many of the clubs of the globe and be only 23 years. It seems impossible, but it's a quick summary of what the 2010 meant to Joan Reyes.
Completely self-taught and without any linkage to the world of music, the young Barcelona star saw his first work pressed on a vynil at 17 and before age 20 had already remixed big names like Sash!, D. Ramirez, Eddie Thoneick or the legendary The Communards. In 2008 he joined the team of the elitist Spanish label Fresco Records, owned by David Amo & Julio Navas. A year later, his track "Ready For Love" landed her first No. 1 on radio charts and his remix for Amo & Navas’ "Heart Beat" became a turning point that predicted what was about to happen: his classic "Shakedown" was an awesome underground hit and received support from big names like Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, Popof, Mark Knight, Tocadisco, John Acquaviva and many more. Bass Kleph’s remix of the track got one of the greatest Beatport’s # 1 becoming the second best selling track of the year. At the same time, "Oye Mira" reached Top1 in countless radio stations in Spain and South America, becoming a mass phenomenon in the summer of 2010 with frequent appearances on TV and an impressive presence on the networks.
Then the madness began.
Gigs all around the globe, remixes for some of the biggest names and his productions like "Kit Kat EP" or the recent "Freakbuster EP" defined the unclassifiable sound of Joan Reyes. There was also time for great collaborations as "Chakra"-with the renowned Spanish artist Taito Tikaro, “Salida” with Bass Kleph -published by the UK label Toolroom Records, was Top10 House for more than two months-, or the recent “One Bite” along Amo + Navas for the American label Nervous.
In February 2011 he received the DeejayMag award that recognized him as the Best Breakthrough Producer of the Year, as well as get the second position as Best Breakthrough DJ and third as Best Producer of 2010 and entered into the Top20 best Spanish artists list alongside names like David Penn, Abel Ramos, DJ Chus and Wally Lopez. Months later, Joan received the DJOner award that also crowned him as Best Breakthrough Producer of the Year, culminating the fantastic season that 2010 meant to him.
Joan Reyes has managed to place his name in the dance scene with quality and originality, rejecting any kind of label and pigeonhole their sound, defining his style as "music for everybody" and creating a world after its own way of understanding EDM.
